Junior/Intermediate Environmental Scientist – Reclamation & Remediation
Position Summary
PineCrest Environmental is seeking an Intermediate Biologist to support wetland and watercourse assessments, regulatory applications, environmental approvals, field programs, and technical reporting for projects throughout Alberta, with potential support for select projects in BC.
This role is intended for an Alberta-based biologist with approximately 5–7 years of environmental consulting experience, strong field skills, sound technical judgement, and developing regulatory experience related to wetlands, watercourses, and environmental approvals.
Responsibilities
- Complete wetland and watercourse field assessments, including desktop review, field planning, wetland delineation, watercourse classification, habitat observations, GPS/GIS data collection, and field notes.
- Prepare and support regulatory submissions, including Water Act applications, Wetland Assessment and Impact Reports, mitigation plans, and supporting environmental documentation.
- Apply relevant Alberta wetland, watercourse, Water Act, Public Lands Act, fisheries, and species-at-risk requirements.
- Prepare technical reports, constraints reviews, screening memos, regulatory applications, environmental management plans, and client deliverables as required.
- Support project managers and senior technical staff with regulatory strategy, scheduling, mitigation recommendations, and practical project execution.
- Coordinate professionally with clients, regulators, contractors, landowners, Indigenous communities where applicable, and internal project teams.
- Support junior staff through field guidance, technical writing support, QA/QC, safety planning, and professional development.
Qualifications
- A degree or diploma in biology, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field.
- Professional designation, or eligibility for designation, with a relevant Alberta association. BC registration is considered an asset.
- Typically 5–7 years of environmental consulting experience, including wetland and watercourse assessments and regulatory applications in Alberta.
- Experience with Alberta wetland identification, delineation, classification, impact assessment, mitigation planning, and replacement requirements.
- Working knowledge of Alberta Water Act approvals, Code of Practice requirements, Public Lands Act considerations, fisheries requirements, and species-at-risk considerations.
- Experience preparing WAIRs, ABWRET-related inputs, watercourse assessments, mitigation plans, and regulatory application packages with senior review as required.
- Strong technical writing, field documentation, data interpretation, QA/QC, client communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience supporting junior staff, leading small field crews, and maintaining quality and safety expectations is considered an asset.
Hours & Compensation
- Full-time intermediate technical position with salary and benefits based on experience, designation or eligibility, field capability, regulatory experience, technical writing, and client service skills.
- The role includes office, field, client-facing, and regulatory support responsibilities, with seasonal fieldwork expected during wetland and watercourse assessment windows.
